Course outline

Days 1 & 2

  • Team leader roles and responsibilities
    You’ll consider the role of the team leader and whether you can do things differently to become more effective.
  • What makes a good team leader? 
    You’ll assess your current strengths and areas for development and make an action plan.
  • How to lead teams without executive authority 
    You’ll explore different approaches and skills for leading teams effectively. You’ll practise with tools and techniques you can use in your role.
  • Goal and objective-setting for team leaders 
    You’ll practise setting and communicating goals, targets and deadlines aligned with your organisation’s goals and objectives.

Days 3 & 4

  • Monitoring performance 
    You’ll get to grips with the question: ‘What is performance management?’ You’ll find out how to identify performance, capability and conduct issues at source and without delay. And you’ll learn how to take appropriate steps to remedy situations and develop your team towards high performance.

  • Holding difficult conversations 
    You’ll practise taking part in challenging conversations and explore ways to resolve conflict. You’ll learn how to prepare for different scenarios you might face at work.
  • Motivating the team 
    You’ll try out techniques with your fellow delegates to motivate individuals and teams.

Days 5 & 6

  • Coaching using GROW and kata methods
    You’ll practise using uncomplicated but impactful coaching tools that will improve your team’s performance.
  • Basic lean tools and how to apply them 
    You’ll be introduced to the 8 Wastes of Lean, 5S workplace organisation, and problem-solving. You’ll apply these highly effective tools in a lean simulation exercise, and conduct a Go, Look, See activity in your workplace.
